The Queen of the Nile was the common name given to Cleopatra, the most famous of all the ancient Egyptian queens. She has been portrayed as a beautiful and sexy temptress probably because of her famous love affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Unfortunately we don’t know whether she was beautiful or not, because the only real evidence of what she looked like are imprints on gold coins and carvings that have survived. From these, it is difficult to know what she truly looked like, but beautiful or not, she was known to be very intelligent, extremely persuasive and a great diplomat.
Movies and paintings mostly depict Cleopatra with black straight hair with heavy bangs. However, from a coin found and a bust of Cleopatra in a Museum in Egypt, we know that she wore her hair in tight curls and a small bun in the back. Like many women of the time she probably used henna which gave the hair a reddish tint. The black straight hairstyle we know her for may have been a wig or headdress used for state occasions. She was said to have bathed in asses’s milk in order to preserve her beauty. In fact, legend has it that it took about 700 asses to provide enough milk for a bath. This may well be true because asses’ milk has been used since Egyptian times for both cosmetic and medicinal preparations.
If you are fascinated by the life of Cleopatra, then you should read The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George, a 976 page epic which brings to life the world of Cleopatra and is told in the first person. Or why not read William Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra written back in 1623. It was one of Shakespeare’s best known tragedies and written ten years after Julius Caesar.
If you prefer to see Cleopatra on the silver screen then you really ought to watch the Oscar winning blockbuster, Cleopatra (1963) starring Elizabeth Taylor which was one of the most expensive films ever made.
If you want to watch something a bit more light-hearted, then I would recommend you watch Carry on Cleo which came out in 1964 and was a parody of the 1963 film.
I hope this page has given you some ideas for a sexy Egyptian costume.
